The house sheltered Confederate sharpshooters during the three-day conflict, one of whom it is believed to have accidentally shot 20 year-old Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade, the only civilian who died during the battle. More than 135 bullet holes prominently riddle its south-facing red brick facade.

Gettysburg’s reputation for being one of America’s most haunted towns dates well before the Civil War, owing much credit to the Farnsworth House and the restless spirits bound within it.

It is composed of three strong, horizontal steel forms – the terrace, the floor of the house, and the roof – attached to attenuated, steel flange columns. In many ways also, Mies van der Rohe was able to realize spatial and structural ideals that were impossible in larger projects, such as the Seagram Building. For example, the I-beams of the Edith Farnsworth House are both structural and expressive, whereas in the Seagram Building they are attached to exterior as symbols for what is necessarily invisible behind fireproof cladding. In addition, the one-story Edith Farnsworth house with its isolated site allowed a degree of transparency and simplicity impossible in the larger, more urban projects.
It’s believed as many as sixteen ghosts haunt Farnsworth House, including the spirit of an 8-year-old boy named Jeremy who died in the house soon after being struck by a horse-drawn carriage on Baltimore Street. His ghost has been witnessed both inside and outside of the house, watching over children playing near the street. Then there is the phantom midwife named “Mary,” whose spectral figure is often seen wandering inside and in the hallway near the bedroom she died in. For three days, Rebel and Union skirmishers fired relentlessly at one another.
Later, the house was in the crossfires of bullets shot by opposing armies. All of the bullet holes remain in the house’s exterior today, and from the upper level, one can see the bullet hole that entered Jennie Wade’s house that fateful night. Your tour will include stories in the Garret (attic) of the Historic Farnsworth House, where you will see lit cases of Civil War artifacts/relics. See the window where it is believed the sharpshooter was positioned as he took the fatal shot that ended the life of the only Civilian who died during the battle of Gettysburg, our towns own Jennie Wade. As you journey further up the street, you will learn about and pass actual “witness trees” as you walk a short distance to hear stories just outside the Jennie Wade house and learn more of poor Jennie’s fate on July 3, 1863.

You can see them patrolling the grounds, stalking up and down the staircase, and creating pockets of frigid cold wherever they linger.
